An excellent first edition of this illustrated study of the birds of Western Africa, edited by Sir William Jardine as part of The Naturalist's Library. First edition, bound in half calf with marbled boards. Dated using Jisc from copies of the work held at The University of Liverpool libraries. Published as part of Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library, which covered a variety of topics relating to the natural world. Jardine was a Scottish naturalist, best known for this particular series. Edited by Jardine, although this volume was written by fellow ornithologist and entomologist, William John Swainson. This particular volume was on the subject of ornithology, more specifically relating to the natural history of the birds of Western Africa. Part II of II. With a memoir of French explorer, author and naturalist, Le Vaillant. Illustrated with thirty-two colour plates, a coloured illustrated title page, and a portrait of Le Vaillant. Collated, complete. In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the boards and joints. Previous owner's ink inscription to the verso of the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot. The occasional light offsetting from plates. Very Good . Ill.: Not Stated. Very Good .

Tucker Abbott notes in his preface that this is "one of the most beautiful and most rare of shell books.. produced in London in three editions, from 1821 to 1841. The early issues were so rare that the book remained a bibliographical puzzle until comparatively recently." This facsimile reproduces the complete third (1841) edition plus portions of the first and second editions. Lovely copy of a lovely book. .
